BOROUGH COUNCIL

BUSINESS AT LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION PLANS. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. There were also present Councillors W. White, R. Russell, H. E. Gardner, G. D. -Wilson, Trevor Beetham, G. W. Morice, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, A. D. Low and A. T. Jackson.

The Masterton Croquet Club was given permission to use' an additional area of lawn in the Park for about a fortnight in November for the Croquet Association’s annual tournament. It was decided to offer the Lansdown Croquet Club sufficient land between the bridges for two croquet lawns, at a nominal rental of £ 1 per annum, a sub-committee to meet a committee of the club to determine the exact requirements. It was decided to draw the attention of the Wairarapa Football Association to the. terms governing the letting of the Park Oval for Soccer matches and to point out that the Association was not complying with the conditions relating to spectators being kept back to the roadway. Unless the conditions were complied with, the council stated that it would be compelled to cancel the use of the Oval for the remainder of the season. It was decided to reduce the rental .from £5 to £3 10s for the season, the charge made in past years. ’ The Park Bowling Club is to be informed that the custodian is talcing every possible precaution to abate the damage done by rabbits in the Park. The club had written complaining of damage to the club’s green by these rodents. It was decided to write off the rent for the halls used for the Hawke’s Bay Relief Fund Ball, subject to same being validated by the Government. The W.E.A. was granted the use of a room for lecture purposes on the same conditions as last year. In reply to the St Vincent de Paul Society, which applied to have the rent of halls on the occasion of the last Charity Ball written off, it was stated that it would be necessary to pay the rent now owing and on receipt of same the council would make a grant to the society of a like amount from unauthorised expenditure and that the same procedure would be followed with the ball to be held next '

month. A letter was received from Mr J. A. Betts asking the council to consider a proposal to erect a chilling chamber at the abattoir. The matter was held over meantime, the chairman of. the Abattoir Committee, Councillor Low and the Mayor being deputed to wait on Mr Betts to discuss the proposal. Mr F. J. Staniforth was granted a taxi driver’s licence and was given permission to use the Church Street taxi stand. A letter was received from the Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army thanking the council for the considerate manner in which it had treated the local officer in the rearrangement of its open air stand.

It was decided to rescind a resolution passed in October, 1937, relative to exempting certain sections in Bentley St from the provisions of Section 128 of the Public Works Act, 1928. The council also decided to grant similar exemption to a section on the corner of Lincoln Road and Bentley Street. In reply to the Wellington Provincial Celebration Committee regarding Centennial memorials and celebrations the council agreed to the tentative suggestions as to zones and to communicate with other local bodies with a view to setting up a local centennial committee. Mr Jordan said the Government had promised a subsidy of £1 for every £3 collected in respect to district and provincial memorials, which had to be approved by the Provincial Committee before the subsidy was payable. It was proposed to class the Wairarapa district as one zone. The council agreed to shoulder its share of the cost -of the Wellington Provincial Court at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition. Mr Jordan said the expected cost of running the court during the term of the exhibition was £12,000 and the council’s share was about £348, the payment of which could be spread over two years. The Mayor and Councillor Gardner were appointed delegates to attend a meeting to be convened by the Mayor to set up a district committee.
