REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH.. The Borough Inspector, Mr T. A. Russell, reporting to last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council said there were eight cases os diphtheria in June and one of erysipelas. To date this month two further cases of diphtheria, one case of erysipelas, one of scarlet fever, and one of puerperal pryea had been reported. Plumbing and drainage:—Eight sewer connections including three to Government houses were installed and 17 plumbing and drainage permits issued. Requisitions:—The following requisitions were served: Plumbing and drainage repairs seven, cut back trees three, clear away rubbish two. Two dogs were destroyed. Special rubbish collection: —Extra rubbish was removed from eight premises. Licensing:—The licensing of food and other premises has been completed. Milk supply: The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis. Six supplying farms were inspected and conditions were found to be satisfactory. The Government milk officer has not so far been successful in inaugurating a milk in school scheme in Masterton. This is regrettable as too little milk is being used in a good many families in the Borough.
Traffic: —Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £654.14s sd. Thirty-three applicants for drivers’ licences were examined, five failing to pass the test. The testing of.drivers is increasingly taking up Inspector McGregor’s time. Nine persons were prosecuted for breaches of regulations or by-laws, a conviction and fine being secured in each case. Twenty-seven cases are pending. BOROUGH ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Borough 'Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, reported:— Streets:—Casel Street stormwater drain is now practically complete. This drain is now in first class order right from Bunny Street to the creek in Booth’s bush. Approximately four chains of footpath on east side of Jean Street at saleyards end is being Herbert Street roadway has been resurfaced from Dixon Street to the Methodist Home, also Michael Street from Chapel Street to the creek. Crushing operations have been carried on during the month, approximately 588 J cubic yards of boulders having been crushed. The Waipoua River Diversion work is proceeding satisfactorily except for hold-ups occasioned by the broken weather. The bride contractors commenced pile driving on July 7 and are making good progress, the formation proving uniformly tight so far. Water and drainage:—During the month one new service and one renewal were installed. Approximately 6 chains of 4 inch cast iron water main have been laid off Tararua Street to the new Government cottages, also three chains off Cornwall Street along the path of new road. Tobys were repaired in Cornwall Street and Upper Plain Road. GAS ENGINEER’S REPORT. The gas engineer, Mr J. Y. Douglas, reported that in June the total gas manufactured was 4,655,700 cubic feet, being a decrease of 75,800 cubic feet oi’ 1.6 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. The gas sold per meter showed a decrease of 5.5 per cent. Sales included six gas fires, five cookers, one storage water heater, two hotplates and one copper conversion. The works were running very satisfactorily at the present time and during the month most of the men were engaged in putting in new services and cleaning and renewing old ones.
