CLERICAL WORKERS
NEW AWARD BY ARBITRATION COURT. STARTING AGE GRADINGS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 16. A new award for clerical workers in the Northern Wellington, Westland, Otago and Southland industrial districts has been filed by the Second Court of Arbitration, taking effect from July 18 and remaining in force for a year. It does not apply to employers bound under a number of other clerical awards. Wages ascend up to £5 10s a week, in gradings according to starting age. Thus a boy starting at under sixteen, reaches £5 5s by halfyearly increments in the ninth year and thereafter receives £5 10s. Later starting ages reach £5 10s in the ninth year, but if a start is made at an age over 21, the minimum wage of . £5 10s applies forthwith. The starting age gradings and hours of work are those of the establishment in which the worker is employed, but in cases not covered by awards, the hours are not to exceed 40 a week. Conditions ag to overtime are set out and a two weeks’ holiday is provided at the end of each year of service. The award does not apply to executive officers in receipt of not less than £350 a year. In the case of female workers, the commencing wage for those under 17 years of age is 15s weekly, increasing to £2 15s in the seventh year, and continuing at £3 5s weekly thereafter. The weekly wage for those commencing work between the ages of 17 and 18 years is 18s, between 18 and 19 years 21s; between 19 and 20 years £1 4s; between 20 and 21 years £1 7s, and thereafter £3 ss, in each case rising to a rate of £3 5s a week in the seventh year and continuing at that rate thereafter.
