MASTERTON BOWLING CLUB
ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the annual report of the Masterton Bowling Club to be presented to members at the annual meeting on Thursday next: —The past season, from a bowling point of view, was very successful, bowlers being enabled to play for seven months (from the first week in October until the end. of April). The Club was indeed fortunate in retaining all its old members and gained some very fine new members who made wonderful progress in the game during the season. We are looking forward to some of these colts taking part in championship events this coming season.' Club competitions attracted very large entries and created great interest as well as many surprises. The Match Committee are to be congratulated for the efficient manner in which they successfully managed the various competitions—it was particularly noticeable that all championship games were completed well up to time, to enable the winners to take part in the Champion of Champion games. We congratulate the winners of the competitions as follow:— Champion singles, J. Campbell; champion pairs, J. C. Ewington and W. Christian; champion fours, J. L. Hughes, D. F. Thurston, J. C. Ewington and V. Taylor; club fours, J. Watson, A. J. Allison, Foster Percy and V. Taylor. Some very interesting games were played for the challenge trophies between your club and the Park and at the close of the season, the trophies were held as follows: —Bell Shield, W. Christian, E. W. Nielsen, L. Hughes, C. Perry (s); Mutrie Cup, G. Stewart and E. J. Reid. The club is indebted to the following gentlemen for donations during the season:—Mr. F. H. Dunderdale, new lino, on floor around billiard table, spike harrow for the greens, and £5 towards new tools, etc.; and Mr. A. W. Scott for a donation of £3 3s towards cost of extra labour on topdressing; a blazer for Club use. Two valuable members of the Club left the district towards the end of the season —the Rev G. F. Stockwell and Mr A. W. Scotland your Committee took the opportunity of making a small presentation to these two gentlemen prior to their departure. Owing to the. very dry summer and the restrictions on hosing, the greens suffered through insufficient moisture, particularly No. 1 green; and it was found necessary to have this green ploughed up. However, we were fortunate to get a good strike of grass, and this green will not require very much expenditure for some years. At the latter end of the season our groundsman resigned, but your Committee were fortunate in securing the services of Mr. Trovorrow for the balance of the season and for the preparation of the greens, and we are very much indebted to him for the splendid service he gave. The financial position of the Club is very sound, although on account of the heavy expenditure incurred with No. 1 green has put our account in debit. However, as stated above, this expenditure will not be recurring for some years. In conclusion, your Committee desire to express their thanks and appreciation to the selector, Match Committee, Board Stewards, Green Superintendent, and to all who in many ways have assisted in the well running of the Club during the past season. For and on behalf of the Committee, J. F. Roberts, president.
