Sir Edward Beatty, Canadian Pacific chairman, hopes to place a contract in England immediately for two ships of 25,000 tons, with a speed of 23 knots, for the Australia-Canada service. The total cost will be £3,000,000. A final agreement has not yet been reached, as New Zealand has not yet accepted some of the less important features of the' proposal. The other parties have all agreed. Sir Edward adds that a replacement of the Canadian Pacific Atlantic tonnage is also under consideration, and it is possible that a speedier sister-ship to the Empress of Britain will be built in 1940 and two Empress boats for the Hong Kong service next year to replace the Empress of Russia and the Empress of Asia. Total orders in the next three years will amount to £ll,000,000.
