COST OF PENSIONS
SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE LAST YEAR. THE DEPARTMENT’S REPORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Pensions totalling £6,312,530 were paid during the year ended March 31 last, according to the annual report of the Pensions Department, which was presented in the House of Representatives yesterday. This sum represents an increase of £1,372,102 over the pension payments for the previous year. The cost of pensions last financial year was £4 3s 2d a head of European population as against £3 5s 9d the year before. A table in the report shows the gross payments for the past two years of all pensions administered by the department. Details are as follow: — Class of pension. 1936-37 1937-38
