COLOURS AND FABRICS
TO BE WORN IN SPRING. For the spring there will be suiting material borrowed from men’s tailors —pin stripes, hair line stripes, in orthodox colours such as black and white or blue and white, and unorthodox, feminine ones, like orchid and vivid lily of the valley green. Materials showing a canvas weave, like heavy tie silks and surrahs, silk linens and Cotton net (tremendously good for evening frocks). Slim, straight skirts, with the movement in coats, creeping round to the back. Fitted, feminine waists. Exquisite draping for afternoon frocks, not even leaving the sleeves out of it. Sometimes the folds are reversed with softly draped bodice, high, draped neck, and the softly-drap-ed waist which continued down to flatter the hips and resolve into a skirt which softly gathered its folds to the back. There will be grand, strong colours. Pleated skirts, usually in surrah silk, done in about one inch pleats and stitched down to help the hips. These are usually worn with suit jackets, usually cling to the generally accepted length of fourteen and a half inches from the ground. Striking colour combinations. Evening gowns made of three materials, suits with yokes, lapels, and part of the sleeves in contrasting colours. A hovering between waist lines, usually bridged over by draped waist lines, or by cummerbund, or velvet corselet, or by giving a sweater top a belt, or by seaming, which makes it difficult to tell which (apart from the natural waistline) is the one that’s meant. And never any disguising that the frock’s fundamental lines are built up on the premise that the waistline is where Nature meant it to be.
