WHO’S WHO
GRACE MOORE was born in Tennessee and was educated there and in private finishing school. Although she had sung in church choirs, her first real voice training was at a Music School. Over the. objections of her parents, she went to New York to study for an operatic career and for a while sang for her supper at the Black Cat restaurant in New York. She got her first stage opportunity as understudy in “Hitchy-Koo.” This led to featured billing in Irving Berlin’s Music Box Revue. Two years after that she made hei’ debut at the Metropolitan in “La Boheme.” “One Night of Love” was her first film and next week she stars in “I’ll Take Romance” at the Regent. ,
SMITH BALLEW, born right in the heart of the great Southwest, the real cow country, Smith Ballew experienced a great thrill when he was made an honorary Texas Ranger by Governor Aldred of that state recently. Palestine, Texas, was the birthplace of the screen’s outstanding cowboy singing star. He learned to ride a horse almost before he could walk, and the lore of the range served as Ballew’s “Mother Goose.” Ballew completed his
education in his native state, graduating from the University of Texas. As a symbol of his membership in the Ranges, Ballew was presented with a ten-gallon hat which he declares he will wear at least once in every picture to bring him luck. Currently he is starred in “Hawaiian Buckaroo,” in which Evalyn Knapp plays opposite Ballew, George Regas, Pat O’Brien and Harry Woods.
