WARWICK BAT FIRST
ON A SLOW WICKET MODERATE SCORE COMPILED. GOOD START BY AUSTRALIA. (Recd This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 1?. The weather was fine for the cricket match Australia versus Warwickshire today. Bradman won the toss and sent Warwickshire in. There had been little rain and the wicket which had been covered played slowly. Barnes kept wickets for the first time in the tour. By lunch Warwickshire had scored 95 for the loss of 3 wickets. In Waite's second over Croom was out to a snick to first slip. Thompson played too late to an inswinger and his middle stump was uprooted. Santail swung Waite hard to leg and the ball struck Fingleton on the head and he retired hurt. Santail and Dollery had taken Warwickshire’s score to 48 when the former snicked a leg-break from O’Reilly, and was caught at first slip. O’REILLY FREELY HIT. Dollery and Ord scored brightly. O’Reilly, bowling with an unreliable length, was freely hit but after the. pair had raised 100 runs in 125 minutes, Dollery gave a simple catch at mid-on. Ward belatedly was called on at 137 and immediately had the batsmen in trouble. A FLUKY SCORE. Buckingham scored a fluky 15 and Cramner, a former Rugby international and celebrated as a big hitter, drove Ward three times for four but was stumped in the same over. Ord, after a fine innings of 115 minutes, was caught at fine leg. He hit seven boundaries. TAILENDERS GO QUICKLY. The tailenders were quickly dismissed and the innings ended after 200 minutes’ play. Ward was easily the most impressive bowler.
Australia opened at 3.45 p.m. with McCabe and Brown, in order to enable Fingleton to rest. McCabe scored ten from Mayer’s first over, but played a ball on in Mayer’s next over. IRONICAL APPLAUSE. Bradman and Brown, apparently wanting a practice, batted quietly amid ironical applause, and the cry “This isn’t a Test match” was heard when Brown, after 105 minutes’ batting, reached 28. Bradman, who was in 90 minutes for 42 runs, hit harder, but the bowling was accurate and runmaking difficult. BRADMAN OPENS OUT. After 5.30 o’clock, however, the batsmen opened out. The partnership was worth a hundred in even time, and when the change, Santail and Croom, operated Bradman scored at a fast rate and reached the century in 135 minutes. At stumps Bradman had batted 150 minutes and hit eleven 4’s, and Brown who has been in for 165 minutes, hit four 4’s. Fleetwood-Smith fielded as substitute for Fingleton after the latter received an injury to his head. The scores are as follow:—
