PUT TO THE VOTE
WELLINGTON, This Day. Crowded galleries listened to the concluding stages of the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives last evening, when a division was taken on the no-confidence amendment moved by the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Adam Hamilton. This was lost by 41 votes to 19. The debate extended over eight sitting _days, and 71 speakers took part—--50 Government members, 16 Opposition members and five Independents. Last night’s speakers included the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon M. J. Savage, who reviewed the achievements of the Government and compared it with the policy of the previous Government. The House adjourned at 10.25 p.m. after the debate had been wound up by the mover of the Address-in-Reply motion, Dr D. G. McMillan
OPPOSITION NO-CONFIDENCE AMENDMENT Division on Party Lines GALLERIES FILLED , FOR FINAL SPEECHES (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
(Government, Dunedin West). The voting on the amendment was on party lines. Absentees from the division list included Mr A. C. A. Sexton (Independent, Franklin) and Mr H. M Rushworth (Independent, Bay of Islands). Mr C. A. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont) and Mr R. A. Wright (Independent, Wellington Suburbs) voted with the Opposition. Ministerial answers to members’ questions were circulated and discussed in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. These dealt with a variety of subjects, many of which related to questions of purely local interest. Steps to appoint select committees were taken at the beginning of the sitting. The House is discussing today the report of the Committee of Inquiry into maternity, services.
