TRADE OVERTURE
EXPECTED FROM GERMANY ACCESS TO EMPIRE MARKETS ‘ BEARING ON EUROPEAN POSITION By Telegranh—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, July 12. The Australian Associated Press understands that an early move is expected from Germany for an expansion of trade with the Dominions. The German Government as a sequel to recent Anglo-German payments agreement, has already asked for duty concessions on imports to the United Kingdom, in addition to concessions bv certain overseas territories. The latter comprise the entire British Colonial Empire, excepting that East African possessions covered under the Conf*' Basin Treaty, concerning which a Ger man delegation interviewed the Colonial Office, seeking substantial concessions. This development, immediately on top of the debt agreement, is regarded as of considerable significance. It accords with a growing belief that the self sufficiency plan is not working- as well as it was intended to, for which-reason Germany is seeking a larger share of international trade. It is gathered that Britain primarily is holding her hand, pending a Czechoslovakian settlement. If this can be achieved peacefully by English, French, German and Czechoslovakian co-opera-tion, then Britain will be ready for immediate negotiations with Germany.
