HURRICANE PLANES
RECORD RETURN FLIGHT FROM FRANCE AIR FORCE ACHIEVEMENT. FORMATION TRAVELS AT 260 MILES AN HOUR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, July 12. It is officially announced that the 11 Royal Air Force Hawker Hurricane planes, which recently flew in formation from Northold to Paris, made a record on the return flight, by flying over Croydon in 51 minutes, and reaching Northolt in 55 minutes. The time of 55 minutes is the fastest in which the journey between Paris and London has been made, either by an individual aircraft or by a formation. The Hurricanes’ flight, which was against a strong wind, was made via Boulogne and Lympe to Northolt, a total distance of 235 miles. The approximate speed of the formation was 260 miles an hour.
The previous record was 57 minutes, by single civil aircraft which flew direct between the Croydon and Le Bourget aerodromes, a distance of approximately 200 miles.
