ROAD CYCLING

NOTES ON SATURDAY’S RACE. (By "Three-Speed.”) Saturday’s race was a big event for the Wairarapa Road Cycling Club. There was a large attendance of the public at both the start and the finish. Sixty-one riders faced the starter. L. Barlow, of Petone, off the tenminute mark, showed good form to win by a wheel from K. Wilson, off the six minute mark, who was not far in front of the rest of a bunch of about twenty riders. The fastest time honours went to K. Wilson, of Port Nicholson, R. Dutton (Poneke), recording the second fastest time. R. Copp, our local cyclist, rode a very fine race indeed, and he was the first Wairarapa rider to finish. B. Harman also put up an excellent performance but the pace on the return journey was a bit hot for him. L. Green, M. Graham, R. Killington, O. Morris and B. Dooling rode very well and they are to be complimented on their performances. J. Duckett and J. Brader had bad luck at the start as they fell. J. Brader remounted but J. Duckett, after remounting and going about half a mile, had to retire owing to machine trouble. The manner in which the race was controlled reflected the greatest credit on the officials. The ladies’ committee are to be congratulated for having looked after the visitors at afternoon tea, this being a very happy ending to a successful day’s sport.
