SEVRES POTTERY

CELEBRATION OF SECOND

CENTENARY. The Manufactory of Sevres, famous throughout the world for its porcelain groups and pottery, this year celebrates its second centenary. Founded in 1738 in the castle of Vincennes, it was later removed to Sevres, closer to the court. Bought by the king, Louis XIV. it was honoured by the patronage of Madame de Pompadour and grew rapidly in popularity under artists such as Bachelier, Falconet, Duplessis. Biscuit china was then the great discovery, making possible the manufacture of those delightful statuettes and groups of figures famous everywhere. The Manufactory of Sevres is close to Paris and is open to visitors who can see the methods of manufacture and visit the museum containing rare and beautiful specimens, not only of Sevres wear, but of pottery from all countries, among them a number of pieces of Wedgwood.
