MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. STOCK ON ROADS. (“Times-Age” Special) The Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill, presided at the monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council, held last, night. There were present: Councillors M. N. Hardie, W. F. Gundrie, G. R. Cotter, W. H. Corfield, D. J. Green, P. R. Plummer, T. A. Hamilton. Leave of absence was granted Councillors C. R. Holmes and M. Mulvaney. Mrs M. Blackwell and Mr R. J. Wright wrote applying for permission to transfer their rights to screen pictures in the Town Hall to Greytown Pictures Ltd. The application was granted subject to the transfer complying with the terms of the existing lease. A complaint was received from a ratepayer concerning stock being herded in the streets of the town. The matter was referred to the ranger. The Director of Housing Construction wrote stating that he was obtaining Cabinet approval of the purchase of some town sections at the cost of transfer, which it was presumed was the intention of the council. “That seems very satisfactory,”- observed the Mayor. It was decided to spend £BB in water-proofing the southern wall of the Town Hall. GOLF MATCH. A match between teams from the Carterton and Martinborough Golf Clubs, played on Saturday, resulted as follows: — A teams at Martinborough (Carterton players mentioned first): Fourball matches.—R. The best cards in a medal handicap played at Martinborough were: —K. Arthur, score 94, handicap 27, total 67; M. S. Francis, 92-22-70. Handicap adjustment: K. Arthur, 27 to 23. The best cards in an eclectic handicap played by the Martinborough ladies’ club on Saturday were: —Mrs A. B. Martin, .score 43, handicap 5, total 38; Miss J. McAllum 44-6-38; Mrs T. A. Knutson 48-10-38; Miss F. Mitchell, 52-14-38. The draw for next Saturday, when a Stableford bogey handicap will be played, is as follows: —Miss McAllum v Mrs .Knutson; Mrs Griffiths v Mrs Marflitt; Mrs Frank v Mrs Parsons; Miss Mahood v Miss Harvey; Miss Mitchell v Miss Blundell; Miss Jury v Mrs A. Miss Ngaire McLaren, of Bush Gully, has returned from a visit to Rotorua. Mrs L. G. Sievers and Miss Jessie Sievers, of Hikawera, have returned from a holiday in Rotorua. Mrs Eliza Bird, relic of the late Mr William Wilson Bird, whose death occurred on Sunday, is an inmate of the Greytown Hospital. Members of the late Mr Bird’s family are: Messrs William Bird, of Eketahuna, Charles of Featherston, Fredrick of Pirinoa, Edward of Hinakura, and a daughter, Mrs A. Brentnail, of Martinborough. RADIO CLUB. At the monthly meeting of the Radio Club held last evening, Miss M. Quinn was elected a member of the club. It was decided that a social be held on Monday, July 25, and a dance on August 23.
