MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL BUSINESS BEFORE FINANCE COMMITTEE A meeting of the finance committee of the Masterton County Council was held this morning, Councillor H. H. Mawley presiding. The treasurer reported a debit balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £8625 3s 9d. Receipts since the last meeting totalled £3195 7s Bd. Subsidies outstanding from the Main Highways Board for road maintenance and construction work amounted to £2942 14s 9d. Accounts totalling £5698 15s Id were recommended for payment. Riding balances at date were reported as follow (all credit): Opaki £1655 Os 6d; Rangitumau £899 16s 4d; Upper’ Taueru, £590 9s sd: Te Whiti, £336 12s 2d; Uriti £402 11s 4d; Wainuioru, £238 5s 2d. The secretary-manager of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board advised that as the revenue received for two years ending May 31, 1938, at the Opaki crushing depot was in excess of the amount guaranteed no call was being made for electric power consumed at the depot for the two years in question. Particulars of the heavy traffic fees allocated by the council as distributing authority for the No. 10 heavy traffic district for the year ending May 31, 1938, were tabled. The action of the County Clerk (Mr J. C. D. Mackley) in arranging for the installation of electricity in the roadman’s cottage at Wangaehu was endorsed. The architect, Mr Raymond Lee, reporting on the three cottages erected by the council, said the maintenance period had now expired and recommended that the final payments be made. He reported that in each case the contract had been carried out to specification, and that a good job appeared to have been made.
