WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. LOSS ON INDIAN MATCH. A meeting of the Wairarapa HockeyAssociation was held in Masterton last evening. The president (Mr G. Hayne) occupied the chair and there was a full attendance of members. Although the complete statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the visit of the Prince of Malawadar’s Indian team to Masterton was not available, it was estimated that a loss of approximately £5O would result. Nearly 2000 people attended the game, but the expenses of the tourists were heavy as the team was in Masterton for nearly four days. To enable the Association to keep faith with the guarantors it was decided to appeal to the New Zealand Hockey Association for assistance, and to furnish them with a complete, balance sheet. The game itself was a great success, the Indians giving a delightful exhibition of the code, and it is hoped that the visit would do much to improve the standard of play and at the same time help to popularise the game in Wairarapa. A vote of thanks was passed to all those who helped in entertaining the visitors whilst in Masterton.
The report and balance sheet in connection with the annual tournament held on June 6 was read and adopted and showed that the tournament had been a great success both socially and financially. The dance in the evening was not so well attended as in previous years owing to it having been held on a Monday night. A recommendation that a smaller hall be engaged in future was adopted. The committee was accorded of vote of thanks. The Wairarapa College applied to have their bye on July 16. This was agreed to, and the games drawn for July 16 will be played on July 23. A. Harp applied for a transfer from the Greytojwn Club to Carterton. This was granted. The New Zealand Hockey Association advised that the secondary schools’ tournament had been allotted to Wanganui. The tournament would last a week, commencing on August 23. The Wairarapa College team will attend the tournament. The New Zealand Hockey Association accepted a Nordon Cup challenge from Wairarapa, but would advise later when the game would be played. It was decided to write the Wellington Hockey Association inviting that body to send senior and third grade teams to play Wairarapa on a suitable date. It was decided to postpone all men’s hockey on July 30 when New Zealand would play the Indian team in the second test at Wellington. It was decided to play the annual North v South match at the end of the season. Three rounds will be played in the senior competition, the winners of the third round to be declared the winners of the Bannin Shield. A generous donation was received from Mr C. N. Cole who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs R. S. Moor was carried by acclamation. The next meeting will be held in Greytown on August 8.
