STATE THEATRE.
Jane Withers is at her uproarious best in the proudest racing silks on the tracks in “Checkers,” her latest Twentieth Century-Fox picture, which is showing at the State Theatre. Even when Lady Luck forgets to act like a lady, Jane is a thoroughbred in this new screen play directed by H. Bruce Humberstone. The. custom of many Little Theatre groups to adjourn to country barns for the summer season found a counterpart in the Twentieth Century-Fox film company which invaded a secluded f!alifornia farm for sequences for “Checkers.” In an old-fashioned red barn, white-washed inside and complete with harness and tackle, water buckets, hay loft and assorted miscellany, Jane, Stuart Erwin, Una Merkel and Marvin Stephens filmed their scenes for the new hit. These scenes “down on the farm” form the preliminary backgrounds to a great story.
