BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION COMPETITION RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S GAMES. COMMENT ON THE PLAY. The following are the results of basketball matches played on Saturday in the Wairarapa Association competitions:— A grade: —lona beat High School Old Girls 11., 26—10; Stars I. beat College B 18—3; High School Old Girls I. beat College A 24—17. B grade:—lona beat College IV. 24— 6; Carterton beat Stars 18—3; Dalefield beat College I. 12—9; Technical Old Girls beat College 11. 26—10.
The A grade match between lona and High School Old Girls showed the lona team to be definitely superior, particularly in passing. Both teams, however, were using long passes and long goal shots, particularly in the first half of the game. Even if sometimes these shots are successful they are not features of good basketball and it should be the aim of coaches and captains to obtain quick, short, accurate passing. Pat Hanley deserves praise for her good work during the game. The passing of the Old Girls’ team spoilt a good game. High School Old Girls I. and College A had a hard struggle, particularly in the centre, those deserving particular mention there being J. Russell, for Old Girls, and M. Upston and R. Edwards for College. On the whole Old Girls had the advantage in the centre. N. Cohen was in very good farm, helping to pile up the score for Old Girls. J. Gemmell played a keen game for College. The College forwards showed good combination. Both teams used short passing very successfully. Stars I. were definitely superior to College B, particularly the forwards. The positional play of this team was very successful. A. Burgess was a most useful defence player. The c ° Ue &- team is increasing in speed, though the passing is inclined to be ragged. In the centre J. Russell was playing accurately, and H. Leich was a very lively forward. The match between Technical Old Girls and College 11. displayed some poor passing by both teams and much dropping of the ball, which can only be overcome by constant practice. C. Jorgenson was a useful defence player for Technical Old Girls. The Carterton team is playing very good basketball and should consider playing in the A grade next season. The centres did good work against Stars. Their passing was good and goal throwing accurate. For Stars J. Searanke played a useful defence game. P. Reynolds should take more time when taking aim at the goal. Dalefield, though playing one short in the centre, showed better combination than College I. and more accurate goal shooting. There was a good deal of wild passing by both teams. The College team should take the game more, seriously. All players should move directly after getting rid of the ball and should make greater use of the whole court. lona were too good for College IV. and though playing one short in the centre showed some good passing. The, College team made some rash attempts at passing, and were also liable to drop the ball very frequently. There was unnecessary crowding round the goals. In the A grade Technical Old Girls team defaulted to Stars. The Association is sorry to see this happen. Is this lack of interest among the members of this team? All players are reminded that they should be careful to play in strict uniform, without the use of coloured cardigans, etc. The position of the Queens in the Queen Carnival is as follows: lona 720; High School Old Girls 480; Stars 375; College 100. The closing date for the carnival is August 13. The representative team is having two practices each Saturday, and on this week’s showing is definitely increasing in the speed and accuracy of play.
