GAS MASKS
30,000,000 BEING DISTRIBUTED.
The British Air-raid Precautions Department has sent out to local authorities a memorandum on the plans for the distribution of gas masks. The department claims that Great Britain leads the world in the provision of gas masks for the civilian population. ■Last year the department announced that the Blackburn factory would produce 30,000,000 gas masks by March 31 of this year. The figure was actually reached by March 29. Now it remains to produce another 10,000,000 or 15,000,000 to provide a mask for every person in the United Kingdom, and the factory has been turning them out at the rate of 500,000 a week. The masks cannot be distributed in advance of an emergency. They must be kept, to maintain their full efficiency in a “conditioned” atmosphere but this is not difficult to provide, and the department is preparing to hand ‘.hem over to local authorities to place in depots capable of storing 30,000 each.
