CARTERTON
A HEAVY FROST. (“Times-Age” Special.) The heaviest frost of this winter was experienced here on Saturday, the result of which was noticeable in shady places all day. Several water pipes in the borough burst. WELLINGTON RACES. A large number of those who “go a-racing” patronised the early special train to Trentham on Saturday with varying luck throughout the day. PASSENGERS COMPLAIN. Complaint is made by passengers who travelled by the excursinon train to Wellington races on Saturday that the heaters were apparently not in use early iij the journey. It was only when the train reached Kaitoke that any semblance of warmth in the carriages was felt. MINIATURE RIFLES. The Carterton Club will be represented against South Featherston on the latter’s range on Wednesday by the following:—A team: H. H. L. Meyrick, R. Taucher, R. Hawker, N. F. Teal, Miss Fisher, D. Gayfer, C. J. De Lacey, J. T. Bridge, Geo. Sewell, W. Sewell. Emergency, R. Zillwood. B team: Misses McPhee (2), S. McGarvie, J. Hayes, E. Miller. Emergency, O. Daysh. WAIRARAPA v. WELLINGTON. Twenty Wairarapa miniature rifle shooters journeyed to Wellington on Saturday and fired the annual home and home match against the Welling-
ton marksmen, being defeated by 15 points. Wairarapa was not represented by its picked team, the whole five emergencies taking the place of those > who were unable to be present. At the conclusion of the contest the visitors were entertained at.supper. At a suit-; able interval the donors of the cup, Messrs F. Frost, of Petone, and W. Johnson, of Featherston, jointly presented the trophy to the two associa-i tions to be fired for annually in Wei-' lington and Wairarapa respectively. They then called upon Mr H. K. Smith, captain of the Wairarapa team, to formally present the cup to Mr P. W. Congreve, captain of the Wellington team, which he did in a few well chosen words, expressing the hope that the generous donation of both presidents would be the means of keep competition - each time" the contestants met. The next shoot would take place on the Greytown range about the middle of August when he was sure a keen contest would result. (Applause). Mr Congreve thanked Mr Smith for his kindly Reference and the victorious team, and said he was sure Wairarapa would extend Wellington when next they met. The scrutineers were Messrs C. J. Entries for the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association’s championship meeting to be held at Greytown on Saturday, July 23 are coming in fairly well and it is expected a record meeting will be the result. SAVAGE CLUB MEETING An enjoyable evening was spent at the fortnightly meeting of the Savage Club. Several new members were initiated. Items were given by the glee and dramatic clubs, a sketch by Big Chief Hall, an address by the Rev W. F. Stent, and a trombone solo by Mr D. Irwin. PERSONALS Mr J. J. Johnston, of the railway staff has been transferred to Hukanui. Mr Johnston will be greatly missed in football circles. He has been a prominent member of the Carterton senior fifteen while stationed at the local office. Mr Clive Williams, late of Hodder and Tolley, has joined the staff of Messrs J. R. McKenzie (Ltd), Wellington.
