MEANS OF GRACE

Sooner or later, and the sooner the better, we have got to come back to theology, says the Rev A. E. Whitham in his book "The Discipline and Culture of the Spiritual . Life.” For the Christian religion cannot exist without it. There is no enduring peace, content or power for us save through convictions that, are as much convictions of the mind as of the heart. Further, religion as we understand it. and' the Christian religion in particular, has no power, no transmuting energy, unless it be supernatural. Means of grace are always means whether of psychology, gymnastics, cold baths, mental exercises or any other disciplines. Whether of rituals, sacraments or methods of prayer, they are means of grace. And grace is the activity of the love of God that is greater than our hearts and older than all created things.
