CLASH IN INDIA
TWO NATIVE STATES AT ODDS CASUALTIES ON BOTH SIDES. COMMISSION OF INQUIRY IMPEDED. 3 (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 8. The recent dispute between the Indian States of Sikar and Jaipur was the subject of a statement in the House of Commons, by Mr Muirhead, Undersecretary for India, today. Trouble broke out in April, he said, between Jaipur, Darbar and the Rao Raja of Sikar, who is a feudatory of the Maharajah of Janpur, and whose city of Thikana is part of Janpur State. The cause appears to have been the degree of control which Darbar exercises over Thikana. As a result of an informal invitation of the resident in Rajputana, Rao Raja left Jaipur on April 23. On May 25 the Jaipur Government appointed a commission under the chairmanship of an official of the Indian political service to investigate the causes of the trouble and suggest remedial measures. The continued refusal of the inhabitants of Sikar to allow the re-establishment of a normal administration, however, prevented this commission from starting work on the spot. On three occasions on July 5, armed supporters of Rao Raja opened fire on Jaipur troops and on the police, who returned the fire. Two Jaipur police were killed and seven wounded. Fourteen of Rao Raja’s supporters were killed and 30 wounded.
