EMPIRE’S DESTINY

CREATION OF CHARACTER. Addressing 2500 children, gathered in Westminster Abbey for a special Youth Service, the Bishop of Bristol, Dr. C. S. Woodward, asked them to believe in the destiny of the British Empire. They must have a right conception of the motive underlying their pride in the Empire, which must be service by making a spiritual contribution to the life of the whole world. The character of any country depended in the long run upon that of its individual citizens. The youth present would go forward to create the character of England in the next generation; the success or failure .of the Empire would depend upon them. The manner of men and women they becarrp was within their own power —that was their character. That was the one thing for which they were solely responsible, the greatest contribution they could make to the life of their country, their Empire and the life of the whole world.
