Three bombs thrown simultaneously on the Bund at 6 a.m. today marked the beginning of the first anniversary of hostilities. The objectives of the bombs were a Japanese sentry post, the headquarters of Japanese gendarmerie and the Yokohama Specie Bank. One Chinese was killed and one injured. Japanese soldiers and police have formed a cordon round the area. The Chinese also commemorated the anniversary of the war by attacking the Japanese on a 25-mile front between Pengtseh and Hukow, on the south Bank of the Yangtse-kiang and claim to have retaken Hukow. JAPAN’S NARROW GAINS AT ENORMOUS COST IN LIVES (Recd This Day, 9.55 a.m.) SHANGHAI, July 7. Foreign observers estimate the casualties in the war at 1,000,000 Chinese, and 300,000 Japanese. They point out that large tracts of the occupied territbry are in the hands of Chinese guerrilla forces. Actually the Japanese control extends five miles on each side of the railways and waterways. None of the victories have been decisive. TRIBUTES TO THE DEAD (Recd This Day, 9.55 a.m.) TOKIO, July 7. A minute’s silence was observed at noon, as a tribute to the war dead and memorial services were held throughout the country.
