LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION

MASTERTON BRANCH MEETING. DISPOSAL OF JUMBLE SALE PROCEEDS. A meeting of the council of the League of Nations Union was held on Monday, Mrs T. R. Barrer being in the chair. The secretary, Miss Barrer, gave a resume of the membership, which stood at 80, an increase of five for the month. Three lectures were given during the month and a new youth group formed at Whatman Home. It was decided to dispose of the money raised at the recent shop day as follows: £25 to Madame Chiang Kai-shek’s appeal on behalf of Chinese children; £5 to the War Refugees Children’s Home, and £5 to the Save the Children International Union. Letters were received from Lord Cecil, the Otago branch annual report, and booklets from the Goodwill Club and Christian International Fellowship of Youth. Miss Barrer stated that should members or others interested contemplate a tour of England or other countries she would welcome inquiries, as through the medium of the Goodwill Club and others it was possible to arrange interesting tours at reasonable cost. Mr Kemnitz reported that arrangements were well in hand for the two functions on July 21 wll-n the Negro debating team would be in Masterton. It was decided that members should provide a plate each towards the supper and help in the sale of tickets. It was decided to make arrangements for members and others to help in the transport of a party of 24 Maoris who would be taking part in the welcome and entertainment of the visiting Americans. Those willing to assist were requested to inform the secretary. Mrs Barrer stated that arrangements had been made by the Women’s Division to run a jumble sale every month on behalf of the League of Nations Union. Owing to the success of the branch’s first jumble sale and the apparent demand that existed for this kind of sale it was decided to hold jumble sales from time to time, the next to be at the Te Ore Ore pa. Miss Tankersley was appointed acting treasurer during Miss Elliot’s absence in Australia. Mrs R. Douglas and Miss Barrer were appointed delegates to attend the League of Nations Union Conference in Wellington. It was stated that future meetings of the branch would be held in the Women’s Division rooms. One of two vacancies on the council was filled by a youth group representative from the Whatman Home. Mrs Miller was appointed representative to the Pan-Pacific Committee being formed in Masterton. Remits for the conference were discussed and approved.
