PLAY ABANDONED

OWING TO HEAVY RAIN AUSTRALIA-YORKSHIRE MATCH WAITE PUZZLES BATSMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, July 5. The cricket match between Yorkshire and Australia ended in a draw. Heavy rain fell during the luncheon adjournment, and there were intermittent showers during the afternoon. After three inspections of the wicket the captains decided to abandon play. The game was resumed in gloomy and threatening weather. Verity (0) and Wood (0) reopened Yorkshire’s second innings, the county needing 150 runs to beat Australia. By the lunch interval the score was 83 for three wickets. The last ball of McCormick’s second over rooted up Wood’s off stump. SMART FIELDING. Verity was foolishly run out in attempting a third run from a splendid drive by Sutcliffe. It was a smart piece of fielding and combination between Bradman and Hassett. Thereafter, Sutcliffe and Hutton played confidently, though neither were able to score off Waite. McCormick, on the other hand, became expensive. LEG TRAP SUCCESSFUL. Waite set a leg trap and began to bowl off-spinners. Light rain began to fall at,. 12.30 o'clock and the ball became slippery. Yorkshire still needed 92 runs to win when Hutton tried to glance an off-break from Waite and was splendidly caught by Fingleton in the leg trap CONFIDENT BATTING. Sutcliffe and Barber were batting confidently at lunch time, when Yorkshire needed 67 runs to win with seven wickets in hand. It is generally agreed that the rain almost certainly saved Australia from defeat. The scores were as follow: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings ( 222 Second Innings 132 Grand total 354 YORKSHIRE. UNIVERSITY MATCH. RAIN CAUSES DRAW. (Recd This Day, 10 a.m.) LONDON, July 5. Rain stopped play in the match between Oxford and Cambridge and it ended in a draw.
