BADMINTON

AUSTRALIA V NEW ZEALAND.

VISITORS MUCH SUPERIOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The first night’s play in the badminton Test match, Australia versus New Zealand, played in the Wellington Town Hall last night, gives Australia a lead of nine rubbers to nil. In these nine matches New Zealand could win only one set, which Miss M. Kerr, New Zealand champion, took from Miss M. Horsburgh, the Australian champion. The superiority of the Australians was as marked as the scores indicate. The New Zealanders were outclassed in every department of the game—strokes, court position, tactics, quickness in seizing the opportunity to kill the weak return, alterations in pace and length, anticipation, arid in doubles, combination. Also their judgment of shuttles dropping near the back line was faulty, and they were far from accurate in playing the sidelines. Detailed results are as follow, Australian players being mentioned first in each instance: — Misses M. Horsburgh beat Miss M. Kerr, 11 —6, 9 —12, 11 —6. ■ C. Croske beat P. Hawksworth, 15 —9, 15—6. Misses E. Robert and I. Hewett beat Miss M. Edmondson and Mrs C. F. Wren, 15—5, 17—14. C Craske and T. Thompson beat J. Spedding and R. W. Lewis, 15—9, 15—8. R. Harper and B. G. Tonkin beat P. Hawksworth and E. A. Roussell, 15 —1, 15—6. Misses M. Horsburgh and B. Cuthbertson beat Misses M. Kerr and N. Fleming, 15 —10, 15 —12. R. .Harper and Miss I. Hewett beat R. W. Lewis and Miss M. Edmondson, 15—9, 15—13. B. G. Tonkin and Miss E Robert beat J. Spedding and Mrs C. F. Wren, 15-4, 15—4. T. Thompson and Miss M. Horsburgh beat E. A. Roussell and Miss N. Fleming, 15 —8, 15 —9.
