PARACEL ISLANDS
OCCUPIED BY FRANCE Possible Seaplane Base Covering Indo-China SERIES OF REEFS AND LAGOONS By Telegraph—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, July 4. It is confirmed in London that France has occupied the Paracel Islands, north-east of Hainan Island, and within easy flying distance of Indo-China. They are a series of reefs and lagoons, suitable for a seaplane base. The islands are not permanently settled and it is therefore in the interests of France that they should not fall into the hands of another Power. France has notified Britain of the occupation. CONCERN IN JAPAN. REPRESENTATIONS MAY BE MADE TO FRANCE. (Received This Day, 9.15 a.m.) TOKIO, July 4. The Domei Agency reports that Japan lacks official notification of the French occupation of the Paracel Islands, which is being watched with concern. Japan may make representations to France on the ground that the islands belong to China. The French landing was carried out by a force of Annamite police. The islands are used as a base by twenty Japanese seaweed, gatherers.
