MODERATE SCORING
ON A TRICKY WICKET BOWLERS IN COMMAND. AUSTRALIA FACES DEFEAT. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Copyright. (Recd This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, July 4. Further rain on Sunday kept the wicket soft for the continuation of the match between Australia and Yorkshire at Sheffield, but the absence of a strong sun left the conditions no more difficult than on Saturday. SMAILES IN TROUBLE. Waite, reopening the bowling for Australia, had Smailes in trouble from the outset. White, at the opposite end, had Smailes easily caught at mid-off without adding to the score. SUTCLIFFE'S DOWNFALL. Sutcliffe’s fondness for the hook led to his downfall when he lifted a ball from Waite a trifle short to Fingleton, who tok a well-judged catch at long leg. The next wicket was Turner’s who was well bowled by White when he had scored 34. Sellars, after swinging Waite to leg for six, was beaten by the pace from the pitch, and was out lbw. A VALUABLE STAND Wood batted with pluck and skill under difficult conditions. He and Robinson made a valuable stand, adding 42 for the eighth wicket in half an hour. Yorkshire was finally dismissed after 265 minutes’ play. Waite bowled unchanged throughout the innings. It was his best performance of the tour. Australia opened its second innings at 2.45 o’clock. BOWES BOWLS BETTER Bowling faster and better than on Saturday. Bowes dismissed Fingleton, who spent a most uncomfortable halfhour in which he was beaten three times. Bowes with next ball should have got Bradman, Hutton dropping a catch in the slips. Bowes in the next over twice beat Bradman, who continued to mishit. Badcock after an uneasy stay of 65 minutes was beaten by Verity’s leg break. Rain stopped play from 4 p.m. to 4.25 p;m. McCabe was batting attractively when a ball kept very low and found his leg in front. VERITY MAKES BALL LIFT. Verity was making the ball lift and turn. He worried Hasset, who was twice missed when ten, but Verity eventually dismissed him. Bradman after an entirely defensive innings of 115 minutes’ duration was caught at short square leg.Waite was out in the same over in attempting an unsafe single. Barnes hit out with the tailenders’ wickets falling. Australia was out after 180 minutes play. The total equals the lowest score of the tour. RAIN STOPS PLAY Yorkshire opened its second innings with Verity and Wood, ten minutes’ play remaining, but rain stopped play before a ball was bowled. The scores were as follow: — AUSTRALIA. The Australian Associated Press says: “Australia faces defeat at the hands of the county for the first time since the war. A total of 150 is not easy to get on a wicket on which proved test batsmen have been made to look a trifle cheap. However, Sutcliffe is well experienced on damaged pitches, and other Yorkshiremen’s understanding of the conditions offers a prospect of a successful task.” VARSITY MATCH CAMBRIDGE v. OXFORD (Recd This Day, 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, July 4. Cambridge in the first innings, made 425 (Gibb 122, Kaye, not out 55, Thompson 79, Yardley 61). Oxford (first innings, 317); in the second innings has one run without the loss of a wicket.
