Higher Discipline.

Catholics, all Catholics, ' whatever nation they belong to, cannot link themselves to human questions without conditions, writes Count Dalia Torre in the “Osservatore Romano,” Vatican City. The Law of God comes before that of men, as well as the source of all power before the concrete exercise of the latter. This truth is undiscussable as well as providential. Were it not so, if this higher- discipline did not exist as an arbiter of social conflicts, civil order itself would be an imminent revolution. Shooting in South Canterbury.

An average season for duck shooting is reported in South Canterbury. The distribution of birds over the countryside this season has been wider than usual because of the large number of small ponds brought into being by the abnormally wet season. June was a poor month for the sport, the fine weather allowing the ducks to retreat to the open sea. Lately, however, rough weather has forced the birds inland again, and low-lying clouds have kept them within range of the guns. There have been several good bags. The quality of the ducks taken is said to be exceptionally good, and there is a plentiful supply of them.

A meeting of the Charity Ball Committee will be held in St Patrick’s Hall on Wednesday, July 6, at 7 p.m. All members are requested to attend.
