The value of exports during May was at the unusually high level of £6,271,000 for the “off-season” period, but imports at' £4,184,000 showed signs of a check. May’s exports were valued at £346,000 more than those for the corresponding month of last year and £1,196,000 in excess of those for May, 1936. May’s imports showed a decline of £257,000 compared with those for May, 1937, but were still £938,000 above those for May, 1936. The excess of exports over imports in May was £2,087,000, compared with £1,484,000 for May, 1937.
