(By “Touchline.”) The Carterton and Opaki teams met at Memorial Park on Saturday, Carterton winning by 8 points to 6. It was a very evenly contested game and well worth seeing. Opaki kicked off and invaded Red’s territory where Morgan picked up nicely, stab kicked and caught Steffert before he could kick. From the scrum, Wallace got possession and sent to Morgan, to Allen, to Hargood.. who was collared by Howie a few yards from the line. Clarke broke away to dribble across but Deller forced.

The Opaki forwards broke away from the line-out, Clarke putting in a great dribble to Braggins who was penalised for deliberately lying on the ball, and Hunt kicked a nice goal. Attacks by Reds caused Opaki to force twice. With a few minutes to halftime, the Whites put in a solid attack and a fine piece of dribbling was seen when Clarke, who was playing splendidly, took the ball right past the whole of the opposing backs and a try seemed certain, but the ball slipped off his boots to enable Leineghan to force. Half-time sounded soon after.

The second half was fast from start to finish. The Red’s forwards started off at a great pace, Whites having to force several times to save. Barrington secured from a scrum in Opaki’s 25 line, sent to Steffert to Wilkins who went over for a try, no goal resulting. Then Hunt kicked a goal from well out, giving Opaki a three point lead. The rest of the game showed fine defence from both sets of backs. Steffert saving his side in fine style. After fielding the bail nicely on one occasion, he cut through to score under the posts, A goal resulted. This was the final score. The Reds deserved their win although a bit lucky. Howie and Brown, last year’s representatives, played great football. Geange was splendid in scrum and line-out work. Alexander. Rayner, Corlett and McPhee were all in good form. Steffert’s play undoubtedly won the game for Reds. Barrington at half, fed his backs nicely. Deller, Wilkins, Salsbury, Braggins and Leneghan were safe right through the game. The Opaki forwards were splendid, their all round play being a treat to see. Clarke in loose work, was the best forward on the ground, and was very unlucky in missing his try. Sinclair, Roygard. Solomon and Condon were excellent in line-out and loose work. Seymour played his usual good game, hooking and attacking solidly, while Goodin and Oliver were always on the ball. Wallace, at half, had a lot to do and did it well. Allen is back to his old form and put in some fine work. Hargood was closely watched but played splendid football. Morgan was clever in side-step-ping but should pass more. Costello played his usual fine game. Guvnor’s defensive play was excellent. Hunt, now in form, fielded and kicked well. Mr E. Grantham controlled the game splendidly. This win gives Carterton the junior championship and I congratulate them on their success.
