CHAIRS ON SKIS
NOVEL IDEAS IN FURNITURE. Novel ideas for furniture seem to be showered upon us with the same bewildering rapidity as new ideas for clothes. One London hostess displayed with justifiable pride at her housewarming party the other day a set of chairs and a sofa upholstered in iceblue satin with mulberry-pink buttons. Instead of the usual legs and feet, they were mounted on skis, which made them delightfully easy to move. A new notion is to have the seats and backs of furniture upholstered in contrasting colours. Charming new curtain fabrics are making their appearance in London just when spring sunshine tends to show up winter curtains as rather drab and heavy. These seem to be either very luxurious material, such as slipper satin or taffeta, with a metal weave, or else simple cottons with a hand-woven appearance. Patchwork fabric is one of the latest things for both curtains and loose covers. It is composed of long panels of different colours, designs, and textures in shades of blue, white, green, mauve and grey. The Duke of Kent has hand-woven cotton curtains for his bedroom at No 3 Belgrave Square. Paprika red and prune purple are effective colours for curtains, and large bold designs are more popular than the smaller floral ones. One attractive material had a beige ground patterned with leaves in a hand-tufted design in paprika colour. Prune-col-oured curtains are particularly good for rooms with a great deal of woodwork, such as diningrooms and libraries and looks very attractive mixed with green.
