ROADS IN MOROCCO

» MODERN MOTOR HIGHWAYS

In 1914, there existed around Casablane and Oudjda only 31 miles of roads. Today, the roads of Morocco measure a total of 20,505 miles. Of these, there are 4,660 miles of main road, with tarred surface, 3,417 secondary roads; all in good condition for any kind of traffic, and 12,427 miles of track-roads, that is, roads without side embankment or pavement. The roads of Morocco never give cause for complaint from the motorist, for they were laid down by engineers who themselves were motorists. With a new country at their disposal, these engineers sent their roads forward in straight lines, and where it was necessary to make' a detour, curves are large and easy. The Foreign Legion soldiers, like those of the legions of ancient Rome, are famous road builders.

Morocco is well supplied with roads for commercial purposes, and now French engineers are turning their attention to opening up tourist centres by means of new roads.
