SWATOW SHELLED

FOLLOWING ON INTENSIVE AIR BOMBING PROGRESS ON THE YANGTSE CHINESE CONSTRUCT NEW BOOM By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. SHANGHAI, July 2. Japanese warships began shelling the city of Swatow today and thousands of the inhabitants are fleeing to safety. This follows the bombing of the town yesterday by scores of Japanese planes when 400 persons were killed. Japanese motor-boats have penetrated the boom at Matang on the Yangtse River. The Chinese have laid another at Hukow, 20 miles below Kiukiang, but the floods are minimising its effectiveness and at the same time retarding the Japanese attempts to travel upstream. GUERRILLAS ACTIVE PEKING, July 2. The Japanese estimate that at present a quarter of a million Chinese guerrilla troops are harrying them in Hopei, Shangtung and Shansi. They are especially stubborn at Nankow Pass.
