FARM NOTES

As a corn on the foot of a horse is due to bruising of the sensitive part of the hoof the only means of prevention is to have shod properly to begin with, and to keep so shod. Young pigs require warmth, and it is this, coupled with wholesome food, which marks the great difference between pigs born in the spring as compared with those born late in the autumn. ■

Nine out of ten lamenesses in the hind legs of horses are due to spivin, to which disease ponies are peculiarly liable. One of the symptoms is going on the tip of the toe so that the shoe is always more wore there. One of the evils of small sties is that the pigs are apt to become overcrowded. When they are fattening they need plenty of room to lie in so that they rest in comfort. Many of the cases of scour amongst young pigs are due to their eating a portion of the sow’s food, which they are unable to digest. The result is first indigestion, and then constipation of the bowels.
