EVEREST CLIMB
PARTY BEATEN BY WEATHER THIS YEAR ANNUAL ATTEMPTS ADVISED BY MR. TILMAN. < FAVOURABLE SEASON BOUND TO OCCUR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 11.5 p.m.) “The Times” Copyright. LONDON, July 3. A succession of yearly expeditions to Mount Everest is wanted, writes Mr Tilman, from Rongbuk Base Camp. ’Summing up the results of the expedition, he points out that there has seemingly been no lull in 1938, between the winter winds and the first heavy snowfall, owing to .an early monsoon, “while last year we were told that the situation was exceptionally favourable, and moreover we saw in 1935 that the mountain was climbable to the end of June. Now we know that a small expedition can do what is necessary if such a succession of attempts should become a possibility. I believe that probably a smaller party than the present should come out every May. A favourable season would occur sooner or later and we have mountaineers capable of taking advantage of it.”
