ROTARY DINNER

INSTALLATION OF PRESIDENT. MASTERTON CLUB GATHERING. The thirteenth annual dinner of the Masterton Rotary Club was held in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms on Saturday night, when the installation of the newly-el-ected president, Mr H. H. Daniell took place. The retiring president, Mr C. R. Mabson occupied the chair. The annual report said that some of the club’s committees had done some particularly good work and in addition to the weekly luncheons several special meetings were held. The weekly programmes had kept in mind the four objects of Rotary. The Wellington Club visited Masterton for the presentation of the Longuet Memorial Shield to Solway College. The Masterton Club retained its interest in the Crippled Children Society and the Institute for the Blind was assisted in various ways by members. The Masterton Y.M.C.A. was helped by donation. The Christmas function for the orphanage children was the usual happy occasion and an appeal from the Rotary Club at Shanghai for the relief of war distress in China was responded to by a gift of £5 from the Sunshine Fund. Thanks were expressed to all who has assisted the club during the year. Mr Mabson, referring to the work of the programme committee, said it was a hundred per cent efficient. He expressed the club’s appreciation of the services of the secretary, Mr A. E. Bate and considered that something should be done to secure a “talkie” plant for the use of Masterton schools. Referring to the international outlook, Mr Mabson said selfishness was at the bottom of all their troubles, both personal and international. They should seek to understand each other. He thanked members for their loyalty and co-operdtion. Mr Mabson then removed the chain of office and placed it on the new president, Mr Daniell. Mr Daniell, in thanking members for their warm reception, referred to his predecessors in office, some of whom were making names for themselves in the world of affairs. He gave a brief outline of the history and development of Rotary and referred to the great community service rendered by the late Mr H. M. Peacock, a member of the club. On behalf of the club and Mrs Peacock, he had pleasure in presenting to the Y.M.C.A. a framed photograph of Mr Peacock. Mr Bate expressed thanks on behalf of the Y.M.C.A. for the gift. A presentation was made to Mr Mabson of an embossed cigarette case. Acknowledging the gift Mr Mabson said he would treasure it as a memento of his year of office. Songs were contributed by Mr C. Torr and a community sing was enjoyed by all. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Torr, Miller Hope, the ladies and the supper committee.
