CITY RATES

INCREASE IN AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 1. Estimates for the current financial year, together with a proposal that city rates be increased by 2Jd in the £, which were submitted by the mayor. Sir Ernest Davis, at a meeting of the city council on Thursday of last week and rejected, came up for consideration again at a special meeting of the council today and were approved and adopted by 11 votes to 8. When the estimates were presented a week ago an amendment by Cr J. L. Coakley that the rates remain the same as last year was carried, six Labour members of the council and Mr W. R. Fee voting with the mover. Notice of motion to rescind this decision was immediately given by Mr J. A. C. Allum, and it was at today’s meeting that this motion was adopted, followed by a further motion adopting the estimates. Including the mayor, there were 19 members of the council present, and on this occasion Mr Coakley and Mr Fee voted with six Labour members against the resolutions. The only Labour member absent from the council was Mr J. J. Sullivan. The other member of the council, Mr A. S. Bailey, is at present abroad.
