NATIONAL WELFARE
MEETING OF MASTERTON LEAGUE. -PROPOSED HOME SERVICE ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday at the Midland Hotel. Those present were: —Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames T. Jordan, J. Caselberg, S. Coradine, G. G. Tolhurst, Gawith, Groves, H. H. Daniell, A. Caselberg, A. Andrew, Engstrom, R. Cottle, Prescott, McCracken, Charleson, L. Hunter, E. J. Coleman, J. Robertson, A. Corskie, Grant, Latimer, Thomas, G. H. Collie, H. E. Pither, A. W. McKenzie, Barlow, A. E. Kilgour, F. Garland, Forsyth, W. Judd, Misses M. Cameron, J. McLaren, Beiliss, Bradbury, Sellar, Wilson, Boddington, Reynolds and Munro and Mr Overton. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames S. J. Munn, Carruthers, H. P. Glen, R. C. Drummond and S. Fletcher. Miss Kummer welcomed the delegates from the various organisations who attended to discuss the Home Service Association question. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Hospital Board advising that an application had been made to the Director of Education for a part-time teacher for handcraft for the T.B. ward and crippled children. Letters of invitation were received from the Navy League to attend an afternoon meeting on July 12, when Mr Darroch would speak, and from the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association to attend a meeting at which Miss Elsie Andrews would be the speaker. Mrs Fletcher wrote thanking the League for the honour paid to her by making her a life member.
On the motion of Miss Kummer, seconded by Mrs Pither, the secretary was instructed to convey the League’s sympathy to Mrs Fletcher in the death of her brother, late Archbishop of Cape Colony. , < Mrs Munn stated that July 14 would be a suitable date to visit the Buchanan Home. Cars w»uld be supplied by Mesdames Pither, Watson and A. W. McKenzie.
Mrs Tolhurst reported on two visits paid during June to the Hospital. The usual tea to the T.B. ward and biscuits, flowers, etc., to other patients had been distributed.
Visitors for July 12 and 19 are Mesdames Coleman and Collie and Miss M. Cameron. Mrs A. W. McKenzie reported having attended to seven cases in the social welfare work. Groceries, boots, and clothing were distributed to necessitous. cases.
Mrs Pither reported on work for the blind. Sales were very good dtiring June. A letter of thanks was received from the secretary of the Institute for the Blind, Auckland, for the league’s assistance in raising £l2 17s at the recent film shown in the Cosy and Regent Theatres. Delegates from the Plunket Society, Navy League, Girl Guides’ Association, St Vinqent de Paul’s Society, Teachers’ Association, Townswomen’s Guild, Y.M.C.A., League of Mothers, and Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union were present and a discussion on forming a Home Service Association in Masterton resulted in a small committee being chosen, namely: Mesdames Robertson, Groves, Thomas, Kilgour, Tolhurst and Miss Kummer, to go into details and report at the monthly meeting in August, when all delegates were asked- to attend. Mr Overton, organiser of the proposal to establish a convalescent home at Rotorua addressed the meeting and outlined the plans. Miss Kummer conveyed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Overton for this address. Thanks are due also to Miss J. Taylor and Mrs R. Jones.
