UNITED STATES PLACES MAMMOTH ORDER LARGEST IN PEACE TIME HISTORY. MORE FLYING FORTRESSES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 1. The War Department has awarded a contract of 14,433,196 dollars worth of fighting aeroplanes, which is the largest order in peace time in the history of the nation. The order has called for 98 aeroplanes, including .13 additional flying fortress bombers, 78 twin-motored Douglas planes, and seven Vultee attackers, also additional motors and equipment. The flying fortress order was given to the Boeing Aircraft Company.
