SHOCK FOR POLICEMAN

“DEAD" MAN ENCOUNTERED IN STREET. BURIAL IN WRONG NAME. Six people, among them several police officers, identified a body found in Innisfail Street, Brisbane, as that of John Edward Cumming, and as such it was buried in the afternoon, after a post-mortem examination was held. Constable H. Ziegenfusz, therefore, got a shock the next morning when he saw Cumming walking along Edith Street, Innisfail. Cumming accompanied the constable to the police station, where he established his identity. The dead man greatly resembled Cumming. He collapsed and died in Edith Street. Police went to the scene, and two of them who had known Cumming fairly well decided that the dead man was Cumming. Other residents, one of whom had known Cumming for 10 years, also agreed. Cumming’s parents were advised, and other formalities observed.

Inquiries showed that the body was that of John Hamilton, who had been residing in a shelter shed for unemployed.
