LAMP POSTS
NEED FOR GOOD DESIGN. Sir Cyril Hurcomb, chairman of the British Electricity Commission, speaking at the conference on electric street lighting /organised by the E.I.M.A. Light Service Bureau in conjunction with the British Electrical Development Association , urged the importance of securing a good design for the posts from which street lamps were to be suspended. A lamp post was obviously utilitarian, and it would be poor art to disguise its purpose, but there was no reason why lamp posts, of whatever height, should not be designed to enhance rather than detract from the appearance of the thoroughfares in which they are placed. The new wide roads afforded particular scope for the united efforts of the designer and the manufacturer. The services of the Royal Fine Art Commissions had been freely placed at the disposal of Government departments and of local authorities in advising upon the aesthetics of bridges and other engineering structures which are prominent in the public view. It would be well worth while for the appropriate bodies to approach the commissions in England and Wales and in Scotland, for their co-operation over lamp posts.
