PLACID CRICKET

EASY WIN FOR AUSTRALIA COLLAPSE,OF DERBYSHIRE TEAM. DOUBLE CENTURY TO BROWN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, June 30. The weather was dull for the resumption of the match between Australia and Derbyshire. Badcock, continuing his innings, opened with two 4’s, but shortly afterwards rain stopped play, from 11.35 o’clock to 11.55 o’clock. BROWN’S PLACID BATTING. Brown continued in a placid way, reaching 80. Badcock became extremely quiet, but was out lbw while playing defensively. He hit 10 4’s. McCabe, in trying a leg glance was caught at the wicket on the leg side. BARNE’S FIRST INNINGS. Barnes then came in for his first innings in England. He lost no time in playing forcing strokes and reached 17 in 20 minutes. Brown, when his score was at 134, had a third escape, Alfred Pope dropping a catch at fine leg off his brother’s bowling. Without Mitchell, whose ankle injury kept him from playing, the sameness of the bowling gave the Australian batsmen ample opportunity to score. Brown hit with great freedom, reaching 200 in 310 minutes. Then he drove Townsend straight for six and continued to cut, drive and pull brilliantly.

A GLORIOUS DISPLAY. Barnes after lunch was subdued and lost his middle stump, after batting 110 minutes. McCabe declared at 3.25 p.m. The Australian innings lasted 355 minutes. Brown in the same time hit one 6 and thirty 4’s. He gave a glorious display after lunch when he showed versatility and vigour, which he does not- often permit himself. INCOMPETENT BATTING. Derbyshire opened its second innings disastrously, losing 4 wickets for 13 runs, Waite getting 4 wickets for 10 runs. The County were dismissed in 80 minutes by three bowlers who are not considered good enough for the Tests. Derbyshire provided the worst example of incompetent, irresolute batting and the lowest total recorded against the Australians on the present tour. Australia won by an innings and 234 runs. The scores were as follow: —
