BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEET ELECTION OF COMMITTEES The chairman, Mr L. J. Taylor, presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors, held last night. Others present were: Messrs P. M. Smith, W. H. Saunders, A. Donald, W. R. Nicol, E. J. Wright, F. C. Daniell and Mrs C. C. Jackson. An apology for absence was received from Mr W. H. Jackson. The chairman extended a warm welcome to the two new members. Messrs Saunders and Daniell. It was decided to place on record appreciation of the services rendered by the two retiring members, Messrs A. T. Jackson and W; A. Clarke. Mr Taylor was also congratulated on his re-election. • The Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, reported that the, average day roll for the first five weeks of the term was 492, and the average attendance was 452. The roll and attendance at the evening classes had been well maintained. The Masterton Orchestral Society gave an excellent concert on May 31, the objects being to help to devel--op an appreciation of good music, and to raise money for the furnishing of the Assembly Hall. There was a good attendance, and the gross profits were £27 16s 6d. A party of 107 in charge of Mr G. W. Morice made a trip to Wellington on June 3. Besides seeing the Coronation Robes, arrangements were made for the pupils to have an hour’s drive in observation buses, and to visit the Art Gallery. The Masterton’s Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Apprenticeship Committee have offered the sum of £3 for the purpose of awarding two prizes, valued at 30s each, one to be given to the most outstanding boy, and the other to the one showing most progress during the year’s work. The prizes would apply to persons' covered by the Apprenticeship Act. With the co-operation of well-wishers, a- concert and dance in aid of the Pipe Band fund was held at Martinborough on June 24. The band and its friends provided a good programme and the dance was greatly enjoyed by all. The net proceeds would be about £7. Appreciative reference was made to the success achieved by the Parents’ Association with jts first annual ball, and it was decided to write to the Association congratulating it on the splendid results of its efforts. Votes of thanks were passed to the Orchestral Society, the Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Committee, and the Martinborough friends for assistance to the college. The following committees were elected: Education, Messrs Donald (chairman), V?. H. Jackson, Mr C. C. Jackson; finance, Messrs Taylor (chairman), Saunders, Nicol; works, Messrs Daniell (chairman), Smith, Wright; Executive, Messrs Donald, Taylor and Daniell.
