The heavy snowfall in the higher country has apparently had the effect of driving wild pigs down to the lower levels earlier than usual. Three lads who were out rabbit shooting near Herbert the other .day met with ah unpleasant experience. They were approaching a manuka clump, and, meeting two men, stopped for a talk. While they were standing, their attention was attracted by the behaviour of one of the dogs, which was growling while gazing towards the clump of bush. One of the lads went to investigate with his rifles and the dog, and a wild boar charged him from the rear, tossing him into a bush. The lad brought the beast to the ground with two rapid shots before it could repeat the attack, but he was lucky to escape with only a minor gash in the hip, made by the boar’s tusks. The experience may be taken as a warning to sportsmen and trampers to be on the alert in country of this nature.
