AGREEMENT REACHED
STABLE HANDS AWARD. NEW WAGE RATES & WORKING CONDITIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 30. An agreement was reached. for an award after a conference between representatives of the Racing Owners', Breeders’ and Trainers’ Association and the Stable Hands’ Union. The first decision made was that the racing and trotting sections 'be separated and the subsequent discussion was on the union demands in application to racing stables. There will be no fixed hours of work but they must finish by six each evening except on race days. A seven-day week was agreed on, with a half day holiday and alternate Sundays off. Also one week’s holiday each year. Irrespective of the hour of starting work, al! workers have time off between 11.45 a»m. and 2.30 p.m. each day except on race days. Wages were fixed as follows:—Head lad, up to six horses, £2 ss; for seven to nine horses, £2 10s; over nine horses, £2 15s; workers 21 years and over, £1 10s; workers, not apprentices, 18 to 20 years, £1 ss. Approved accommodation is to be provided , in addition. The wages clauses affecting apprentices will not apply to those at present under an agreement with the Racing Conference but after the award comes into operation all apprentices shall become members of the union. Wages for apprentices were fixed as follows:—7s 6d during the six months probationary period; then 7s 6d for first year apprenticeship; 15s second year £1 for the third and fourth years.
