HOUSEHOLD HINTS
When cooking potatoes in their jackets, scrub them well, and cut a narrow strip of peel entirely round the centre of each potato. When cooked, the skins will slip off without any trouble. It is sometimes difficult to fit new round cupboards and other fixtures. It is a good plan to cut out a paper pattern first, and let it serve as a guide. When washing white spun silk, fuji, or crepe de chene, add a tablespoonful of methylated spirits to the last rinsing water. This gives the fabric a slight stiffness, and prevents it from turning yellow. Stubborn grease-stains on stone steps can be removed in the following way. Cover the stains with a paste of fuller’s earth and water, and leave it on overnight. In the morning scrape off the paste, aand put in its place a lump of washing-soda. Pour over this some boiling water to dissolve it, and then scrub the steps in the usual way.
Small holes in wood can be filled by melting down old candle-ends and brushing on whilst hot, so that the mixture runs into the holes. Paraffin wax can be used instead of candleends if preferred. j
