CANCER RESEARCH
DR. A. M. BEGG GOING ABROAD. KEEPING ABREAST WITH LATEST DEVELOPMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 29. Dr A. M. Begg. Director of Cancer Research in New Zealand, will leave in August on-a visit to cancer laboratories in London, and will also visit laboratories in other centres in Great Britain. He will be absent from New Zealand for about a year. Dr Bagg’s visit abroad is primarily to carry on research with the object of keeping abreast of the latest developments in the cause and treatment of cancer. For some time past he has devoted attention to the importance of connective tissues in the cause of cancer. His conclusions are that connective tissues should be a barrier against cancer, but that when these tissues become hardened and inert they not only fail to counteract the onset of the disease but even become one of the causes. He will present his ideas to those in control of research institutions which he may visit. If they are accepted, treatment would then become directed toward the removal of such hardened or useless tissue and the replacement of it with an active type of connective tissue. Various experiments, Dr Begg stated, had shown that this replacement of tissues was one of the factors leading to the possibility of a cure of the disease.
